PARTNER PROJECT

FEBRUARY 2023

In collaboration with a fellow student, we were tasked to create a cohesive collection together based on our seperate thematic research. Our archetype for this project was the tracksuit, originally designed for athletics and later adopted as a sportswear fashion by subcultures. Combining the archetypal research with our thematic research, we focused on themes of sensuality, mystery, and fluidity. We aimed to design a sportswear inspired collection that brings a sense of delicate dysfunction to the track suit. We experimented with different textile manipulations, such as dying with both textile dye as well as more nontraditional methods. Our thematic research had undertones of the movement of water, so this was key in our fabric dying process. We also developed a loose stitching technique to add depth to the theme of transparency and dysfunction. Through our research further into subcultures, we decided to translate the popular athletic brand logos associated with the gabber subculture, such as Australian, Lonsdale, and Hardcore, to create a logo that reflects the DNA of our collection. The energy of the collection is captured through our various textile manipulations and anchored by our refined finishings and sportswear details such as the use of drawstrings and elastic.
