SHIRT PROJECT

FEBRUARY 2022

Tasked with starting from a vintage French garment from the 1900’s, the shirt project challeneged us to take details from archetypes and translate them into our designs. We were also required to make the shirt in two different fabrics to challenge our technical skills. My research started with the introduction of The State, from the formation of the Third Republic of France, into peasant life. This highlighted differences in society, but also in what they wore on a day to day basis. Everything about the peasant shirt showed functionality and durability. A shirt that would not rip or decompose over years of hard work was necessary because they would wear the same shirt every single day. People involved with The State lived in urban centers, where they didn’t do physical labor out in fields all day. Their clothes were more about extravagance, not functionality. Through my project, I want to explore the archetype of peasant dressing while mixing the ideals of urban “non-functional clothing” with deconstructed elements of the peasant shirt. Even though it will have details and represent the archetype of a peasant shirt, the function of it will be reminiscent of The State.
